Abbreviated Conners' Rating Scales revisited: A confirmatory factor analytic study

The abbreviated Conners' Rating Scales for parents (CPRS-HI) and teachers (CTRS-HI) are two of the most widely used measures in the study of childhood psychopathology. The present study sought to clarify the factor structure of the CTRS-HI using a more heterogeneous sample than in previous research, and to examine the factor structure of the CPRS-HI for the first time. The factor structure for both 10-item scales was examined in a series of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses with a sample of 2345 parents who completed the CPRS-HI and 1736 teachers who completed the CTRS-HI. The present study found that the CPRS-HI and the CTRS- HI are multidimensional measures when used with normal children and adolescents. The two scales have an identical two-factor structure: a restless/impulsive dimension and an emotional lability dimension. These dimensions were found to be highly correlated for both scales.
